Failing to keep the hens safe

We recently heard about a few incidents of a fox killing chickens in the area. Our local Facebook Community group have had a few cases. With one case - the fox actually bent the chicken wire and found its way in. They seem quiet brazen too.

I've been keeping the chickens in their coup and only letting them out for a brief moment while we feed them. You can tell that they long for the freedom but it's probably for the best at the moment.

However, recently there has been an incident. We have been dog sitting a rather playful dog and I made the mistake of not putting him away while I attended to the chickens. As quick as a flash, he was in the chicken coop and after a flutter of feathers, he managed to pin down one of the chickens. After separating the dog from the chicken but it was too late - the poor hen was scared to death.

I guess it's hard to determine where the dangers may come from in our lives. It doesn't always come from were we expect it.
